The images - rich in color and visual rhythm - span 30 years and several continents. Of course, Haiti and the Mexican border are well represented, locales that opened up a new way to see.He has been able to render Haiti - a place often depicted for its chaos - with a precise eye, finding personal moments that are as still as they are complex. He can use shadows as skillfully as a be-bop musician to set the tempo. The people in his frames can look like dwarfs being stomped on by giant, disembodied feet. He can make an American street seem far more foreboding than any Third World slum.--David Gonzalez"The New York Times" (12/18/2011)A 30-year retrospective of a great, and often overlooked, American pioneer of colour photography who pays scant regard to genre boundaries, merging art photography, photojournalism and often complex street photographs.--Sean O'Hagan "The Guardian "In far-flung corners of the globe, Webb captures glimpses of beauty in impoverished lives and stoicism in the face of strife.--Jack Crager "American Photo "The images -- rich in color and visual rhythm -- span 30 years and several continents.
Beautiful book displaying the work of perhaps the greatest color photographer in the world. Every color photographic frame is wonderful.
This is a terrific book of color street photography. Webb shot exclusively on kodachrome, I believe. He has an incredible ability to find complexity in everyday scenes--there is always a lot going on. Also his use of color is very vibrant and distinctive (it's not just the kodachrome). Hard to describe, but this is a joy to take in, and you will find that his style is so consistent and unique that if you encounter one of his photos, you will know it is his without having seen it before.
Thank you Mr. Webb for letting us into your world and opening our eyes to possibilities deemed only imaginable. I look at these photos and at times I have a hard time understanding how they could even be real. They are simple beyond anything I've ever seen. But what you have done is created a subtextual world, images that seem to go beyond the naked eye.I am so glad I bought this book, it has enhanced my eye and I feel like I am a better photographer because of it. It has also made me realize how much better I can be. Worth every Penny!!!!
If you're learning how to look, this book is probably just as valuable to you as a four-year art college education or any combination of pricey lenses. These are extraordinary photographs to be studied and savored, with retina-splicing color and intriguing composition. They are generally BUSY shots, with a tremendous amount of visual information, secrets, occasional old master painting references (a particularly heartbreaking one of Picasso's blue period comes to mind), and many visual puns. You'll see that photography isn't really about the camera, but about the photographer's skill, and you will gain a new appreciation for this art with Alex Webb's magnificent masterpieces. Don't think twice, it's alright to buy it.
This is an exceptional book. Beautifully printed and bound. Incredible images shown to best effect in a large format. Powerful images that keep going and going as you turn the pages. Going through this book is like taking a master class in color, composition, and light and shadow. Well worth the price. This would make a fantastic gift to anyone with an interest in photography.
